Musk’s Starlink will launch satellite internet services across India.
Starlink has officially secured a license to operate in India, marking a significant step forward in the country’s push for nationwide digital connectivity
India’s communications minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia, announced the approval after a meeting with SpaceX President and COO Gwynne Shotwell, describing the decision as a gateway to India’s “next frontier in connectivity.”
The license, issued under the Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) framework, makes Starlink the third satellite internet provider to receive operational clearance in India, following Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio Satellite Communications.
This milestone positions Starlink to be a major player in delivering high-speed, low-latency broadband through its expansive Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation.
The company has already entered into strategic agreements with telecom giants Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, who together dominate over 70% of India’s telecommunications market. As India intensifies efforts to bridge its digital divide under the Digital India initiative, Starlink’s entry could prove transformative, particularly for underserved rural regions lacking reliable internet infrastructure.
